New Jersey Lawyer:
Popcorn Lung Disease
Bronchiolitis obliterans is a rare and life-threatening form of fixed obstructive lung disease. The disease destroys the lungs—a lung transplant is the only cure. The disease is also known as popcorn workers lung, because it has turned up in workers at microwave-popcorn factories. However, it is also caused by the inhalation of toxic fumes, grain dusts, mineral dusts and irritant gases in other workplaces.

Diacetyl (butter flavoring) and popcorn lung
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) determined that bronchiolitis obliterans in eight popcorn plant employees was most likely caused by occupational exposure to volatile butter-flavoring ingredients, particularly Diacetyl. Employees affected included mixers and packaging line workers.
Do you have popcorn workers' lung?
The disease is characterized by cough, shortness of breath with exertion, respiratory failure and fixed airways obstruction in the bronchial tubes (determined by a test called spirometry). It does not improve when the person leaves the work place and goes home. Unlike lung cancer, there is no treatment. If you are experiencing respiratory problems, and have been exposed to Diacetyl, you should see a physician immediately.
